Mechanisms Concerned with Conception

چکیده

This book presents summaries by specialists of subjects related directly or indirectly to conception. The first five papers deal with male and female germ cells-their production, protection, release, and early transport. Chapters follow on fertilization, transportation of the zygote, and implantation. Finally there is consideration of immunological phenomena relating to fertility and fertility control. Each chapter has an extensive bibliography, and there are author and subject indices. The book is a useful addition to the increasing number of important and current medical and biological reviews, a category which itself is beginning to be overwhelming. Treatment of each topic is careful and detailed, if not always inspired or concise. I was particularly interested in remarks regarding epididymal sperm transport (Risley), sperm migration in the female (Sobrero), and sperm storage at low temperature (White and MacLeod), but there is much else for students and investigators of the physiology of reproduction. Not the least useful product of the 1959 conference is a compendium of over 150 unanswered questions. Assembled by experts at the meeting and brought together in an appendix under the guidance of the indefatigable editor, the questions point directly to some of the gaps in current knowledge of mammalian, and particularly human, reproductive biology. It is a stimulating list.

Evolutionary Developmental Biology and the Limits of Philosophical Accounts of Mechanistic Explanation

Evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) is considered a ‘mechanistic science,’ in that it causally explains morphological evolution in terms of changes in developmental mechanisms. Evo-devo is also an interdisciplinary and integrative approach, as its explanations use contributions from many fields and pertain to different levels of organismal organization. Philosophical accounts of mecha...

Happiness and Chance: A Reappraisal of the Psychoanalytic Conception of Suffering

Freud's allusion to the goal of analysis as that of transforming neurotic misery into common unhappiness implies that the outcome of treatment is not concerned with happiness but with the reduction of suffering. In fact, there is no single standard for happiness but many, some of which bear Freud's thesis out whereas others contradict it. The author examines Freud's views about happiness and co...

THE FIFTEENTH LEVEL (Keynote Address)

The burgeoning workflow software industry did about $200 million business in the U.S. in 1993 and is expected to reach $2.5 billion in 1996. Workflow systems are based on a different conception of work than that on which the entire architecture of operating systems is based. The new conception of work is concerned with the fulfillment of commitments made between people, whereas operating system...

Distributed Conceptual Structures

The theory of distributed conceptual structures, as outlined in this paper, is concerned with the distribution and conception of knowledge. It rests upon two related theories, Information Flow and Formal Concept Analysis, which it seeks to unify. Information Flow (IF) [2] is concerned with the distribution of knowledge. The foundations of Information Flow are explicitly based upon the Chu Const...

Aristotle on Circular Proof

In Posterior Analytics 1.3, Aristotle advances three arguments against circular proof. The third argument relies on his discussion of circular proof in Prior Analytics 2.5. This is problematic because the two chapters seem to deal with two rather disparate conceptions of circular proof. In Posterior Analytics 1.3, Aristotle gives a purely propositional account of circular proof, whereas in Prio...
